Infant Feeding
If you are bottle-feeding, remember to wear a well-fitted bra and avoid breast stimulation. Breast engorgement will generally improve 2-4 days following delivery.

If you are breastfeeding, you may not produce milk for three to four days after delivery. When your baby nurses, he or she will receive clear liquid, called colostrum. This fluid contains important antibodies. When your milk finally begins to come in, your breasts may become enlarged, tender or unusually firm. This can be relieved by more frequent nursing or by applying warm compresses to your breasts, or by taking a warm shower.

Some women develop a breast infection called mastitis. The early symptoms of mastitis include body aches, chills and a fever or 101 or 102 degrees. You may also notice that one breast becomes extremely firm, red hot and tender. Should you notice any of these symptoms, please call us immediately.

If you are experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding, do not hesitate to call the office. We will be happy to advise and assist you. Please remember to continue your prenatal vitamins, particularly if you are breastfeeding, until your first postpartum checkup. If iron supplements were prescribed prior to your hospital discharge, continue to take them for about three months after delivery.
