Ladies, it is time we have a serious discussion about our weight. This is not meant to body shame you or make you feel that you are not a beautiful, valuable, member of our society. It is time to take a hard look at what our obesity costs us – and it is far more valuable than money. It is our very lives.

Obesity is now linked with an increased risk of as many as thirteen types of cancer. Thirteen! While doctors and researchers cannot prove one specific way the obesity causes cancer, the links are becoming too serious to ignore. Hormone abnormalities and increased inflammation throughout the body are both common in obese women and are also two of the suspects in the cancer link. One researcher said that obesity is now second only to smoking in environmental causes of cancers.

Let’s look at what we are risking:

  • Breast Cancer, particularly in older women who have already experienced menopause
  • Cancer of the esophagus
  • Colorectal Cancers
  • Uterine Cancer
  • Cancer of the kidneys

These five cancers have a long standing link with obesity and diet. But a new review recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows links to as many as eight additional cancers:

  • A specific type of stomach cancer that occurs near the esophagus
  • Ovarian Cancer
  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Thyroid Cancer
  • A particular type of blood cancer known as multiple myeloma
  • Gallbladder Cancer
  • Liver Cancer
  • A normally benign type of brain tumor down as a meningioma
