Yearly Exams In The News Again

The headlines on the morning news shows screamed, “Yearly Pelvic Exams May Be Unnecessary?” Unless you stuck around for the story buried somewhere in the second hour, you may be confused by the headline. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force is calling for researchers to provide the Task Force with additional information. They are not issuing a recommendation at this time.

The question is, do non-pregnant women with no symptoms need yearly pelvic exams as part of their annual OB/GYN wellness check? Medical experts disagree. Many doctors feel that they can detect early stage Ovarian Cancer by feeling the ovaries during the exam. Other conditions that are found during a pelvic exam are uterine prolapse, uterine tumors, and endometriosis. All experts agree that sexually active women should be screened for disease.

All experts agree on one thing – women should see their OB/GYN yearly. Are you up-to-date on your yearly wellness check? It’s easy to get too busy, miss an appointment, and before you know it, years have gone by without seeing your doctor.
